MY 2021 Ford Bronco Valvetrain Investigation

On Behalf of | Jul 28, 2022 | Firm News |

On July 22, 2022, NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened an investigation into an alleged defect of the valvetrain on MY 2021 Ford Broncos equipped with the 2.7L Eco-boost engines. The investigation was opened because of concerns that 2021 Broncos appear to have an engine defect that causes the vehicles to abruptly lose power at highway speeds. The ODI learned the alleged defect is due to engine valves failing which results in “catastrophic engine failure.” According to the NHTSA site, “Ford identified the root cause as the valve ‘keepers’ not holding the retainer in place allowing the valve spring to detach from the valve resulting in interference between the valve and the piston. The interference can cause the engine to lock up.”
