IDScan is a New Orleans, Louisiana-based company providing identity authentication solutions to car rental services, bars, casinos, and more. IDScan recently experienced a data security incident, exposing sensitive information belonging to over 170 million North Americans.
On September 1, 2026, cybersecurity expert Brian Krebs published a report about a service advertised on a Russian cybercrime forum. The service is called “Nexus” and contains scans of millions of Americans’ and Canadians’ identity documents. The identity documents on Nexus range from driver’s licenses to medical cards to passports and beyond. Information contained in these documents–including full names and government-issued identification numbers–constitutes Personally Identifiable Information. On September 4, 2026, IDScan confirmed that it experienced a data breach, and it learned of the data breach on September 1, 2026. The Federal Bureau of Investigations is investigation the incident, as is IDScan.
