On August 26, 2022, KeyBank sent notifications to residential mortgage clients who were affected by a data breach of its vendor, Overby-Seawell Co. (OSC). OSC is responsible for verifying that KeyBank’s clients are maintaining property insurance. As such, OSC maintains data including bank clients’ personally identifiable information (“PII”): names, partial SSNs (the first 8 digits), mortgage account information and mortgage account number(s), property information, phone numbers, mortgage property address, home insurance policy number and home insurance information. On July 5, 2022, OSC’s network was accessed by an external party making available the aforementioned “PII,” and on August 4, 2022, OSC contacted KeyBank about the breach.
