Change Healthcare/Optum, Inc./United Healthcare Group, Inc. Data Breach Investigation

United Healthcare Group, Inc. is the parent company of Optum, Inc., a healthcare provider that services more than a 100 million patients in the United States. On October 3, 2022, Change Healthcare merged with Optum, Inc. On February 21, 2024, UnitedHealth Group identified a bad actor had gained access to some of the Change Healthcare information technology systems. Often cybersecurity events such as this one, result in the breach of personally identifiable information (“PII”) and protected health information (“PHI”) which can include such things as names, addresses, social security numbers, dates of birth, diagnosis, dates of service, and medical records. To date, the types of breached information has not been disclosed but Change Healthcare offers tools for payment and revenue cycle management that help facilitate transactions between providers and insurance companies.
