On September 24, 2024, the Central Railroad of Indiana learned about a styrene leak from one of its railroad cars. The car was located near the intersection of US-50 and OH-128 near Cleves, Ohio. An evacuation order was put in place for residents within a half-mile radius of the leak, while other residents were asked to stay indoors, seal doors and windows, close fireplace dampers and turn off their heat. Exposure to styrene can result in tiredness, slowed reaction time, concentration issues and balance issues when exposed to certain concentrations.
