UC San Diego (UCSD) Health’s Disclosure of Patient’s Personal Health Information (“PHI”) and Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”)

Patients who utilized the scheduling website of UCSD Health’s Express Care and Urgent Care between September 13 and December 22, 2023, had their “PHI” and “PII” shared unknowingly and without authorization. The scheduling websites (administered by a third-party vendor) used analytic tools to capture “PHI” and “PII” including names, dates of birth, email addresses, reasons for visits, insurance type and IP addresses. In turn, the “PHI” and “PII” was transmitted to the vendor’s third-party service providers. In similar cases involving analytic tools, these third-party service providers included entities such as Google, Facebook, and Tik Tok. It was not until March 20, 2023, that UCSD Health started notifying the impacted patients.
