National Student Clearinghouse (NSC)/Progress MOVEit Data Breach Investigation

On Behalf of | Dec 15, 2023 | Firm News |

Goldenberg Schneider is currently investigating the breach of National Student Clearinghouse’s (“NSC’s”) MOVEit server, which resulted in the theft of personal information of potentially millions of students.

NSC provides educational reporting, data exchange, verification, and research services to around 3,600 North American colleges and universities and 22,000 high schools. In late May 2023, the Cl0p ransomware/cyber extortion gang exploited a vulnerability in the widely used Progress Software’s MOVEit Transfer file transfer solution, which allowed them to access the underlying database. According to NSC, the files obtained by the unauthorized third party included personal information such as name, date of birth, contact information, Social Security number, student ID number, and certain school-related records (for example, enrollment records, degree records, and course-level data). The data that was affected by this issue varies by individual.

Notification letters have been sent via email to organizations whose data has been identified as affected by the issue. If you received a notification that your personal information was compromised due to the NSC data breach and you would like additional information about your legal rights, you can contact Goldenberg Schneider, LPA by calling 513-982-1569.
